Have you ever heard of National Hot & Spicy Day? Well it happens on August 19th and it’s a real thing, just like the hundreds of other national food holidays that are popping up left and right and seem not to have existed the year before.

But we have to thank Frito-Lays for bringing this one to our attention, because we gotta say hot and spicy sounds pretty good to us. So, in honor of the holiday, they sent us some of their spiciest chips so we could see how our heat tolerance ranked against their scale.

9. Tostitos: Hint of Jalapeño Tortilla Chips

Although the company thinks these belong slightly higher on the list, we have to say these gave us the least bit of heat. There wasn’t much a hint of jalapeno, but there was a nice zest to the flavor. Tasty? yes; spicy? nope.

8. Fritos: Chili Cheese Flavored Corn Chips

These swept up the Jalepeño Tortilla Chips by a narrow margin. We were pleasantly surprised by the smokiness that lingered on our tongues after one bite. Not quite pain-inflicting heat, but good nonetheless.

7. Fritos: Spicy Jalapeno Flavored Corn Chips

Like the Tortillas, a little zesty flavor comes out, but maybe the heat just clings to these chips better because we definitely felt a small hint after eating a few.

6. Smartfood Spicy Jalapeno Ranch Flavored Popcorn

Smartfood has become a grocery store staple and a favorite snack among many, and we have to say, this just stepped their game up. There’s more of a sour cream and onion flavor than ranch, which we were more than ok with. And there’s a good hint of heat at the back-end of that bite.

5. Ruffles Flamin’ Hot Potato Chips

With a taste we can’t quite place, these were the first to give off real heat right away. Their a bit tangier than your typical Ruffles, so if you’re looking for salty, you may not find it right away, but they’re worth a try for their unique flavor instead.

4. Funyuns Flamin’ Hot Flavored Onion Flavored Rings

Funyuns have always been a favorite of ours growing up. They somehow manage to bring the onion flavor without overwhelming us with real onion flavor, which is often too strong. These have the same taste as the Ruffles, but that melds really well with their background onion flavor. As for the heat, it’s definitely there.

3. Cheetos Crunchy Flamin’ Hot Cheese Flavored Snacks

Another one that jumped down on the list, these are Cheetos at their near-finest. Cheesy, spicy, but not spicier than the last two. The familiar flavor is masked a bit by the flavor of whatever spices are added to give it the heat- in a great way.

2. Doritos Dinamita Chile Limon Flavored Rolled Tortilla Chips

We fell in love with these! Their second place in the heat department, but the flavor is all there. You know that mouth-feel when you have a ton of sriracha on something, and the flavor of that meshes perfectly with the sriracha? Yeah, these chips are just that.

1. Cheetos Crunchy Xxtra Flamin’ Hot Cheese Flavored Snacks

Winner, winner! From the second these touched our lips, our mouths were on fire. We would speak to the flavor, but the heat was so crazy, it was all we could focus on.

If you’ve never had any of these selections, you’re missing out. Especially if you’re a spicy food fan. You should definitely work your way up the scale, whether in our order or theirs. We promise you won’t be disappointed.
