Brooklyn Museum First Saturdays August 2022

For over twenty-one years, Brooklyn Museum has hosted First Saturdays—monthly evenings of free programming welcoming visitors from central Brooklyn and beyond—at the Brooklyn Museum. Join for free every month (except January and September).  This event is free, but advance registration is required. Admission is subject to capacity at the time of arrival.

Theme: A Famalay Function

Gather your friends and famalay for an evening of live music, movement, and readings celebrating the vibrant Caribbean diaspora.

BROOKLYN POP-UP MARKET

Stop by our market to shop one-of-a-kind, handmade items from more than thirty artisans and vendors from across Brooklyn, featuring artwork, jewelry, fashion, home and apothecary goods, and more.

Kick off the night with Afro-Dominican composer and vocalist Yasser Tejeda as he shares a unique fusion of Dominican folk music, jazz, and rock.

Enjoy vibes while you shop at our Brooklyn Pop-Up Market with a set by DJ InO, playing a range of genres—from Afrobeat and amapiano to reggae, soca, and kompa.

Join the Sesame Flyers Steel Pan Orchestra, a cornerstone of the West Indian Day Parade Carnival, as they perform on our plaza steps.

BOOK CLUB: THE POWER OF DIGNITY
Luce Center for American Art, 5th Floor

Judge Victoria Pratt discusses her new book, The Power of Dignity: How Transforming Justice Can Heal Our Communities, with Brooklyn Museum Deputy Director of Learning and Social Impact Adjoa Jones de Almeida. Through this conversation, they ask us to reconsider the role that healing and respect can play in our criminal justice system. Seating is limited and first come, first served.

HANDS-ON ART

Create percussion instruments inspired by the music of the West Indian Day Parade (rain location: Education Gallery, 1st Floor).

PERFORMANCE AND WORKSHOP: LAKAY SE LAKAY (HOME IS HOME)

6–7 pm
Choreographer Julio Jean and percussionist Okai Musik host a drum-and-dance performance and workshop that honor traditional Haitian culture and investigate notions of diaspora, identity, home, ritual, and artistic creation. Seating is limited and first come, first served.

Brooklyn-based creative collective EYEWONDER takes over our lobby with dancehall, reggae, soul, house, and R&B hits from around the world.

TEEN POP-UP TALKS

Teen apprentices host ten-minute pop-up talks in Guadalupe Maravilla: Tierra Blanca Joven that focus on notions of family and belonging.

MUSIC: SABINE BLAIZIN AND OKAI MUSIK

Welcome Sabine Blaizin and percussionist Okai Musik back to the Museum with a musical set that celebrates Haitian roots and house music, accompanied by vocalist Gabriel Brunot.

Close out the evening with DJ Ushka playing a genre-blending set that honors the diverse immigrant and diasporic communities of New York City.
