Brooklyn Museum First Saturdays August 2024

Celebrate the dynamic cultures and traditions across the Caribbean with an evening of music, poetry, and film.

This program is free; registration is required and includes Museum general admission. Tickets will be released on a rolling basis starting July 19th for Members and July 22nd for the public. Sign up for the Brooklyn Museum newsletter to be notified of the next release.

HANDS-ON ART
Iris Cantor Plaza, 1st Floor
5–7 pm
Decorate your own Caribbean-inspired fan to help beat the heat and celebrate Caribbean culture.

BROOKLYN POP-UP MARKET
Beaux-Arts Court, 3rd Floor
5–9:30 pm
Shop one-of-a-kind, handmade items highlighting Caribbean artists and vendors from across Brooklyn, featuring artwork, jewelry, fashion, and home and apothecary goods.

MUSIC: METRO STEEL ORCHESTRA
Martha A. and Robert S. Rubin Lobby, 1st Floor
5–6 pm
Kick off the evening with Brooklyn’s own Metro Steel Orchestra, whose steelpan players won last year’s Junior and Senior Panorama Championship. These activities are presented in partnership with the West Indian American Day Carnival Association.

STORYTIME
Education Gallery, 1st Floor
5:30–6:30 pm
Gather around for family-friendly storytime with authors Janet Morrison (A Different Me, A Better You) and Deborah C. Mortimer (Summer Island; Zorah and the Very Big Question). Presented in partnership with Brooklyn Caribbean Literary Festival.

TEEN TALKS
American Art Galleries, 5th Floor
5:30–6:30 pm
Join teen Museum Apprentices as they host 10-minute pop-up talks in the American Art galleries.

FILM: BAD LIKE BROOKLYN DANCEHALL
Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium, 3rd Floor
6–8 pm
Learn about the emergence of Jamaican dancehall in Brooklyn—and then the rest of the country—as told by the musicians themselves, including Shaggy and Sean Paul. Stay after the screening for a talkback with Pat McKay, Screechy Dan, and Red Fox, moderated by Lauren Zelaya, Director of Public Programs.

7–10 pm
Queer Caribbean art collective, party, and platform RAGGA NYC brings Oscar Nñ and Byrell the Great to spin tunes for the evening.

MUSIC: DADA COZMIC

7–8 pm
Dominican-born and Bronx-raised Dada Cozmic plays a selection of dance hits, taking inspiration from local Caribbean underground communities.

POP-UP POETRY

Stop by and hear original work presented by poets Roberto Carlos Garcia, Omotara James, Anesia Alfred, and Christina Olivares. Presented in partnership with Brooklyn Caribbean Literary Festival.

Follow the story of a small family in the countryside of Curaçao in this heartwarming and magical coming-of-age film.

New York’s all-women salsa orchestra, Lulada Club, plays interpretations of classic salsa and bolero songs.
