Brooklyn Museum First Saturdays February 2024

Ring in Black History Month and celebrate the closing of Spike Lee: Creative Sources with a lineup of artists honoring the exhibition’s themes of family and legacy. The first First Saturdays of 2024!

This program is free; registration is required and includes Museum general admission. Tickets are released on a rolling basis. Settle in for a screening of Spike Lee’s feature film debut, the romantic comedy She’s Gotta Have It. Seating is limited and first come, first served.

Celebrate the legacy of enduring Black joy with a meditation led by lululemon Ambassador and Peloton Instructor Dr. Chelsea Jackson Roberts. The experience will be anchored in the love, strength, and creativity of the Black diaspora.

Join teen staff as they host ten-minute pop-up talks on portrayals of Black history in the Museum’s collection.

MUSIC: CLEO REED

Experience Brooklyn-based sound composer, performer, and multidisciplinary artist Cleo Reed’s latest installment of Black American Circus, a series of narrative-driven, self-directed performances. Titled “Come See The Freak,” the performance features songs from Reed’s debut album, Root Cause, as well as unreleased songs from their forthcoming EP.

Celebrate the release of This Is the Honey: An Anthology of Contemporary Black Poets with readings from the contributors, followed by a signing in our Shop. Presented in partnership with BEM | books & more.

MUSIC AND PERFORMANCE: WONTANARA PERCUSSIONS

Discover the role that African diasporic music plays in Spike Lee’s iconic films in this performance and percussion workshop. Musician, composer, and educator Frank Malloy leads this two-hour experience that includes a celebration of Nigerian percussionist Babatunde Olatunji.

The Lay Out, a Brooklyn-based community platform focused on reclaiming space and centering Black joy, returns to close out the evening. Get in a mamba mentality mode with a DJ set by Brooklyn’s own Quiana Parks.
