Brooklyn Museum First Saturdays June 2022

For over twenty-one years, Brooklyn Museum has hosted First Saturdays—monthly evenings of free programming welcoming visitors from central Brooklyn and beyond—at the Brooklyn Museum. Join for free every month (except January and September). Note: First Saturdays do not include entry to Andy Warhol: Revelation. This event is free, but advance registration is required. Admission is subject to capacity at the time of arrival.

Theme: Heaven Is What You Fee

Celebrate Pride with a free lineup of queer and trans artists, musicians, and collectives who are using art to imagine and create spaces of joy, community, and possibility.

BROOKLYN POP-UP MARKET
Beaux-Arts Court, 3rd Floor

Stop by our market to shop one-of-a-kind, handmade items from more than thirty artisans and vendors from across Brooklyn, featuring artwork, jewelry, fashion, home and apothecary goods, and more.

HANDS-ON ART
Brooklyn Museum Plaza
5–7 pm
Join Hands-On Art in the plaza and print a silkscreen poster in celebration of Pride. This program takes place outdoors (rain location: Education Gallery, 1st Floor).

MUSIC: KALBELLS

5–6 pm
Indie rock band Kalbells share dreamy jam music from their sophomore album, Max Heart.

CURATOR TOUR: ANDY WARHOL: REVELATION
Morris A. and Meyer Schapiro Wing and Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Gallery, 5th Floor

Join Carmen Hermo, Associate Curator, Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, as she explores the intersections between Andy Warhol’s queerness and his Byzantine Catholic faith. This program is available exclusively to Andy Warhol: Revelation ticket holders (purchase tickets separately).

POETRY: A TRIBUTE TO JUNE JORDAN
Steinberg Family Sculpture Garden, 1st Floor
6–7:30 pm
Poets Kyle Carrero Lopez, Anaïs Duplan, Marwa Helal, and Crystal Valentine honor the resounding legacy of poet and activist June Jordan (1936–2002) through readings of Jordan’s work alongside original poems. Presented in partnership with PEN America and the NYC Literary Action Coalition. This program takes place outdoors (rain location: Luce Center for American Art, 5th Floor).

FILM: ANGELITO COLLECTIVE PRESENTS CIÓN MAMI
Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, Forum, 4th Floor

Catch a screening of CIÓN MAMI (2022, 2 min.), a fashion film that celebrates trans friendships during a beautiful summer day when anything feels possible. The film will be presented on a loop from 5 to 7 pm. Don’t miss a talkback with the filmmakers at 6:30 pm, moderated by Joela Rivera.

Brooklyn-based Haitian American producer Boston Chery fosters moments of community with her selection of ’90s reggae, dancehall, Afrobeat, and hip-hop.

Welcome the New York City Gay Men’s Chorus back to the Brooklyn Museum as they highlight works from their latest season. This program takes place outdoors (rain location: Martha A. and Robert S. Rubin Pavilion and Lobby, 1st Floor).

BOOK CLUB: BREAK THIS HOUSE WITH CANDICE ILOH

Author Candice Iloh sits down with InterseXtions Teens to talk about their new novel Break This House, which tells the story of a Brooklyn teenager reckoning with her family’s and hometown’s secrets.

FILM: SENSUAL CINEMA WITH ISABEL SANDOVAL

8–10 pm
Revel in Isabel Sandoval’s short film Shangri-La (2021, 8 min.), and then enjoy a screening of Wong Kar Wai’s cinema classic Happy Together (1997, 98 min.). The films are followed by a talkback and Q&A with Sandoval and Andrew Chan, web editor at the Criterion Collection.

9–10 pm
Singer, songwriter, actor, and essayist Nomi Ruiz (a.k.a. Jessica 6) showcases her upcoming album Hi-Def Femme by playing her nu-disco and electro-pop hits.
