Brooklyn Museum First Saturdays

In the spirit of Copy Machine Manifestos: Artists Who Make Zines, honor the antiestablishment ethos of DIY with a gender-expansive lineup of artists and collectives. Experience a range of experimental genres, such as drag, punk, folk medicine, and alternative interventions into film and poetry.

This program is free; registration is required and includes Museum general admission. Tickets are released on a rolling basis. Sign up for the Brooklyn Museum newsletter to be notified of the next release. If sold out, you can also attend by purchasing separate tickets to Spike Lee: Creative Sources for $25. Member tickets to the exhibition are free.

HANDS-ON ART: ZINES

Inspired by artist Neta Bomani’s “How to Plan a Zine Project,” make your own manifesto to give to a friend or keep for yourself.

BROOKLYN POP-UP MARKET
Beaux-Arts Court, 3rd Floor
5–9:30 pm
Shop one-of-a-kind, handmade items by more than thirty artists and vendors from across Brooklyn, featuring artwork, jewelry, fashion, and home and apothecary goods.

MUSIC: MIZU

Classically trained cellist MIZU performs from Distant Intervals, her debut record of soundscapes exploring openness, vulnerability, and wonder. She also previews selections from her upcoming album Forest Scenes.

Tour Copy Machine Manifestos: Artists Who Make Zines with drag queen and theater artist Linda Simpson, whose work is featured alongside more than 100 other artists’.

FILM: GOING TO MARS WITH NIKKI GIOVANNI
Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium, 3rd Floor

Watch the award-winning documentary Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project (Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson, 2023, 96 min.), which travels through time to reveal the enduring influence of renowned poet and social commentator Nikki Giovanni. Followed by a conversation between Giovanni and Doreen St. Félix, staff writer at the New Yorker. Presented with PEN America.

MUSIC: DOWNTOWN BOYS

7–8 pm
Fronted by vocalist and lyricist Victoria Ruiz, punk band Downtown Boys started in the basements and DIY spaces of Providence, Rhode Island, and went on to open for such acts as Bikini Kill. Loved for their radical approach to rock, the band performs a set in both Spanish and English.

MUSIC: YALLA! PARTY PROJECT
Beaux-Arts Court, 3rd Floor
7–10 pm
Dance to sets by resident DJs of Yalla! Party, an artistic collective that celebrates Southwest Asian and North African (SWANA), queer, and nonbinary people of color from New York and beyond.

WORKSHOP: THE GREEN GOLD ORACLE DECK WITH STAR FELIZ
Museum Shop, 1st Floor
8–9 pm
Join Star Feliz to learn how to use the Green Gold Oracle Deck: a set of divinatory cards featuring plants, animals, and elements that may support self-discovery and transformation. Feliz is an herbalist rooted in ancient Afro-Taino traditions and the founder of creative wellness company Botánica Cimarrón.

MUSIC: LAS MARIQUITAS

9–10:15 pm
Immerse yourself in salsa’s legacy as liberation music with Las Mariquitas, which writes fresh, queer, and transfeminist versions of classic salsa songs. The New York–based band starts their set with a lesson led by queer and trans instructors, in an effort to foster a culture of consent on the dance floor.
