Meatpacking District x Whitney Museum ‘Happy Hopper Weekend’

July 19, 2024 - July 22, 2024
Happy Hopper Weekend

The Whitney is home to the most Edward Hopper works of any museum worldwide and each year celebrates the artist’s birthday (July 22nd). This year, the Meatpacking BID, in partnership with the museum, is taking the celebrations to new heights with large-scale, 3-D interactive installations on Gansevoort Plaza from July 19th-22nd, in celebration of Hopper’s 142nd birthday.

Visitors will be able to step inside recreations of three of Hopper’s most recognizable pieces to pose and create their own interpretations of the works with the help of live performers.

  • Nighthawks – Take a seat inside Hopper’s iconic diner scene, complete with a live barista serving coffee from a neighborhood vendor on Saturday, July 20th and Sunday, July 21st, from 11 a.m. onward while supplies last.
  • Soir Bleu – Transporting visitors into Hopper’s introspective take on French café culture, a clown performer will be present on Friday, July 19th, Saturday, July 20th and Sunday, July 21st to set the scene.
  • Early Sunday Morning – Step off the bustling streets of present-day New York City and into the stillness of this portrait of Seventh Avenue in the 1930s.

More Hopper Celebrations
Soir Bleu and Early Sunday Morning are currently on view at the Whitney for those who want to view the original paintings. On July 20th, the museum will be hosting their annual “Hopper Day” celebration which will include the second annual Whitney Hopper Ride, a ~60-mile round-trip bike ride from the Meatpacking District to Hopper’s birthplace of Nyack, New York.
