Sons of Thunder, is a popular poke restaurant, which opened their first location in Murray Hill, before poke was even a thing in NYC. They invited us to the Grand Opening of their newest spot, located in the Financial District.

Just a hop, skip and jump from Wall Street, this location comes a few years behind the original, but that doesn’t mean its lagging when it comes to flavor.

Sons of Thunder is inspired by flavors from Hawaii and Southern California, where the founders, brothers James and Jon Kim are from. In addition to their poke, they’ve been serving up other fresh delights like salmon tostadas, and hot dogs with additions inspired by their roots.

Their most popular items are a fresh tuna and salmon “Half and Half” poke—thought you can’t go wrong with any combo, Baja Fish Tacos, made with beer battered, fresh Alaskan cod, a housemade mango-kiwi salsa and the aforementioned Salmon Tostada, made with salmon tartare, cilantro aioli and Baja salsa.

All of their fish, is as fresh as can be and they break it all down themselves to maintain quality, using only whole fish and loins. We’re told their yellowfin tuna typically doesn’t spend more than 48 hours “between boat and bowl” and their salmon is brought in from the Faroe Islands, known for their stewardship and transparency in quality.

As for the hot dogs, they partnered with The Brooklyn Hot Dog Company—”an organic, all beef dog with zero nitrates, hormones and antibiotics,” topping them with typical to very untraditional toppings.

The new location is planning to also bring a new dessert to their menu, Malasadas, which are homemade Hawaiian doughnuts, and we plan to make a trip back once they’re available.

If you want to check it out for yourself, it’s a great option for a healthy work lunch or a dinner that won’t weigh you down. They’re located at 225 Pearl Street. See for yourself why we’re rooting for more locations!
