If you ever find yourself in FiDi come nighttime, be sure to check out the discreet Alley Cat Amateur Theatre, part of and located below The Beekman Hotel, which opened just this past Spring.
The cellar lounge (which was once an old hidden mechanical room, reminiscent of the backstage of an actual theatre). The space is from nightlife legend Serge Becker, the same brains behind The Box, Miss Lily’s, and La Esquina, makes guests feel as if they have stepped into one of Tokyo’s signature izakaya bars, mixed with a classic American cocktail club. The ambiance actually gave me vibes of a speakeasy, where I thought I would need some type of password to bypass the entrance.
New York City, especially downtown has no shortage of late night hotspots, but the Alley Cat Amateur Theatre may rival them for its cocktails, theatrical vibe, it’s line up of live musical performances. You can enjoy sounds of the ‘Sterling Strings‘ as they play a double set every Wednesday night. Other nights you can find various DJs spinning their best.

Food and drink coincides with theme, featuring Japanese inspired tapas, curated by Tom Colicchio’s Temple Court, located on The Beekman’s ground floor. Specialty cocktails, which start at $18, are well worth one or two. We went with the Tonkatsu as our dish, and a pork fat washed old fashioned (yes it’s a thing!) for our cocktail. You can also choose between a list of Japanese whiskeys, or your usual wine and beers.
As a heads up, when looking for the venue, be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the blue neon lit cat. Located down a small street named Theatre Alley, it can be easy to miss, it even took me a while to figure out it was down this alley way and not an actual street. Reservations can be made via info@alleycatbeekman.com and an upcoming events calendar can be found here.
