Sunshine and heatwaves are two of the summer’s inevitable visitors. The sun, while welcome in comparison to rain and snow, can make it impossible to be outdoors, without something to cool you down. When the hot weather beckons, ice cream is one of the best summertime vices. This summer brought a whole lotta new players to the ice cream arena. Because, while some things are inevitable, sometimes it’s fun to welcome the innovative.
In the spirit of sharing, here are some newer ice creams to get your hands on while the weather still gives us an excuse.
1. Ben and Jerry’s Cookie Dough Cores, Pint Slices and Non-Dairy Flavors
Ben and Jerry’s is churning out scoops by the barrel. Their Cookie Dough Core flavors include Chocolate Chip , Sweet Like Sugar, and Wake and No Bake. After trying just one (courtesy of Ben & Jerry’s generous gifting), I can guarantee I’ll be going back to the store to buy and try the others flavors.
They also offer Non-Dairy options now, for those who prefer less lactose, that comes in Chocolate Chip and Chocolate Caramel Cluster, and pint slices, including Candy Bar Pie and AmazeMint. I for one hope they turn more flavors into these easy to travel compact bars!
2. Oatly
They just launched at the end of June in select small NYC grocery retailers, and in July on FreshDirect. They will be available in national retailers including Whole Foods this fall (though you may be able to find them in NYC Whole Foods sooner).
3. Häagen Daz Spirits

Häagen Daz Spirits come in pint flavors, including Amaretto Black Cherry Almond, Bourbon Praline Pecan, Bourbon Vanilla Bean Truffle, Irish Cream Brownie, Rum Tres Leches, and Stout Chocolate Pretzel Crunch. They’ve also got their own bar flavor: Irish Cream Cookie Squares. For those wanting to start their night with something sweet instead of ending it, these will definitely get the party started right.
4. Talenti’s Gelato Layers
