Join Ōyama for an exhibition walk-thru and discussion about the impact of Rammellzee and New York aerosol writing culture on young people in Japan through early to mid 2000’s.
Focusing on the Letter Racers, Ōyama will contextualize Rammellzee’s work within the historical development and visual language of New York’s aerosol writing culture, and present an overview of Ramm’s activities in Japan, spanning the early to mid aughts. Audience members will also have the opportunity to learn more about Ōyama’s own practice and how his work has been influenced by Rammellzee’s philosophy. In 2017, the artist has edited the special issue on aerosol writing culture entitled SIGNALS! for Bijutsu-Tencho, one of Japan’s leading art magazines, with comparative pieces and essays on artists from both the contemporary art and aerosol writing culture to describe the cultural landscape that spans over two different artistic contexts, highlighting works by the likes of Christopher Wool, Jose Parla, Hans Hartung, Futura2000, Sue Williams, Oscar Murillo, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cy Twombly, Ushio Shinohara, Rammellzee, among others.
