NYLO New York City announces the launch of ‘Secret Beach’, a pop-up bar located on the hotel’s 16th floor rooftop terrace.

The hidden outdoor terrace with sweeping vistas of the Upper West Side, has been transformed into a secluded, oceanic retreat as part of the hotel’s Arthouse @ NYLO ongoing art and culture programming. Open to guests and locals every Wednesday through Saturday from 5pm-10pm until October 27th, 2018, ‘Secret Beach’ will offer guests the opportunity to enjoy an endless summer by the sea on the island of Manhattan. The limited seating for 30 guests creates a space will be a relaxing and intimate environment for guests seeking to extend their summer.

The boutique New York City-based design firm dtls.Architecture were tapped to oversee the redesign of the space due to their local connection as Columbia University alum. The firm relied heavily on the use of sustainable materials to honor the importance of environmental preservation.

Using thematic, nautical tones of blue and white detailing to transform the space, from above, recyclable, blue-lit fiber optic lights cascade down, overlapping to emulate waves collapsing onto a beach and creating an ethereal and soothing effect. The layout of the space is designed with relaxation in mind, with multiple seating options and resting areas to invoke the golden days of summer. The installation of the bar and furniture in the space frames the panoramic view of the Upper West Side, while soft beach grasses underfoot guide guests to relaxed couches and cord loveseats ideal for group gatherings and casual meet-ups. A pleasant contradiction between the urban jungle below and the immersive ‘Secret Beach’ above.

The summer-centric cocktail menu created by Jeremy Fowler, Director of Beverage at NYLO New York City, features signature cocktails imbuing the same creative spirit that shot the hotel’s Willy Wonka-inspired ‘cocktail factory’ to local stardom.

The Rum Traitor is made with Rum, Szechuan Peppercorn, Pineapple and Gold Leaf and served on a treasure map in two wooden barrels. Guests will receive a “ration” big enough for two including a treasure trove of edible gold coins. The Finding Nori is served over sea rocks, topped with grapefruit seafoam, sprinkled with nori and poured tableside out of a ship in a bottle. Guests hanging onto the last dregs of summer can enjoy the Basic Beach, a cocktail comprising Navy Strength Gin, Blue Curacao, lemon tonic and coconut sparkling water. The cocktail is served resting in edible cookie sand with a candy beach ball and a shovel to dig for chocolate sea shells.

In addition to refreshing cocktails, the ‘Secret Beach’ will offer a sommelier curated wine list and also a selection of beer from Toast Ales, a sustainable beer brewed with unsold bread loaves from local bakeries. A nearly zero-carbon footprint operation, Toast Ales donates a large portion of profits to charities striving to end food waste.
