Celebrate a vibrant Day of the Dead at the Museum of the Moving Image with a performance of Aztec Mexica dance, ofrendas, fun digital media activities for kids and families, and music from Indigenous dance troupe Yayauhki Tezcatlipoka. There will also be a face-painting session inspired by historical characters from Día de Muertos. All are welcome to explore their public altar in the Museum’s courtyard, followed by a catrina and catrin contest hosted by artist historian Rosa Ruíz and Catrinamía.

Festivities will include live performances and public art. Día de Muertos is an annual event hosted by the NYC Department of Transportation and the Mayor’s Office of Immigration Affairs. Three Catrinas, large, iconic skeleton statues that celebrate and honor those who have passed will be on display Monday, October 28th- Saturday, November 2nd.
These vibrant figures, a powerful symbol in Mexican culture, serve as a reminder of the beauty and reverence of life and death, bringing a significant piece of Mexico’s rich traditions to the heart of New York City in Times Square Plaza.
