I LOVE the 90’s. I mean, who doesn’t? Clearly the New York City Wine & Food Festival agrees with me, because it was the basic premise behind Flashback Friday, one of many events over the packed, food-filled weekend.
Hosted by Rev Run and Angela Yee, Flashback Friday celebrates an era of nostalgia, with scrumptious bites, tasty drinks and a party complete with the best throwback tunes.
Before we even entered the venue, we had the feeling we were in for a treat. Rugrats costumes and adidas tracksuits adorned the crowd as they waited in line at Highline Stages, the venue for the night. The check-in team also let us know that drinks were available from several bars. Words we like to hear.
As we walked in , we were immediately taken in by several tables chock full of food, with music blasting in the background, like a good ol’ fashioned house party. Lolo’s Seafood Shack served up some shrimp bites, Prohibition Bakery had mini spiked apple cider doughnuts with incredible bursts of fresh apple and cinnamon sweetness, and The Crispery served up some S’mores Rice Krispie treats that I could literally eat for days. A s’more with even more crunch? Sign me up!
Vandal provided Caesar Salad Bites on parmesan crisps which gave it the perfect cheesy tang and even a little toastiness that normal parm doesn’t have, while Buddakan NYC satisfied our taste buds with their not-at-all fishy, but perfectly savory and creamy Spring Rolls. But the best of the bunch were the throwback bites like Fried Pizza Rolls from Bowery Road, reminiscent of those little pizza roll bites we had when we were kids, and Sloppy Joes from Midnights BK—because, duh!
The event was presented by Maker’s Mark, so it made sense that they also provided the cocktails, along with G.H. Mumm and some collagen infused non-alcoholic options. There was even had a fun GIF booth, which provided old-school four frame photo booth print-outs!
The night was perfectly rounded out by a performance from Rev Run, serving up classic tunes we couldn’t help but sing along to. It really couldn’t have given us a better start to the long weekend!
