Have you heard of this magical place called Topgolf? A little late to the game? Either way, the long-famous golfing range made for amateurs and well-versed players alike, invited us to check out their brand new collaboration, and it’s definitely not one we would have expected.

While Topgolf is known for its establishment that allows visitors to play in separate pods, while indulging in quality bar bites and cocktails, their newest collab ‘hits different’. Angry Birds, another popular game, which you’ve probably downloaded to play on your phone at some point, has created a limited-edition gaming add-on and hot sauce to go with Topgolf’s various food and drink offerings.

The sauce basically goes with anything (dippable or not) and is built on Topgolf’s house ranch, giving it some heat and zest with the addition of a hint of garlic and habanero sauce. This combination somehow transforms the sauce into something very new and delicious. The collaboration came as a combo shot to help launch Angry Birds’ newest gameplay, which is also available at select locations of Topgolf.

Unfortunately, the Angry Birds game is not available at the Edison, NJ location we visited, but that didn’t stop us from enjoying the sauce, the atmosphere, or the most fun part of the collab, The Angry Birds Dance—a celebratory dance created by pro football star Roddy White and Ludacris. For gameplay, the venue offers incremental playing from about 30 minutes to 2 hours, with the choice to extend if you want to stay longer. They’ve got a huge variety of challenges to choose from, but for amateurs like us, they had a basic option where you just have to essentially see who can hit the ball the furthest. And we were most definitely grateful for an easier non-aim-based game.

Now back to that dance… according to their press release, the Angry Birds game is said to use Topgolf’s Toptracer technology to mimic the video game, using golf balls as Angry Birds characters to “smash down structures, defeat pigs, and earn as many points and stars as possible.” After a winner has been determined, “Topgolf guests are encouraged to join in on the dance craze and post videos doing the dance to social media. If guests tag @topgolf and use #AngryBirdsDance, there could be a surprise that ends up in their inbox!”

So I bet you’re wondering, how was the sauce? Well, we had to try it out using a few different bases and we gotta say, it defied our expectations no matter what we dipped in it. Starting with BBQ wings, then moving to pretzel bites and even nachos, there wasn’t a thing it didn’t go well with. We even threw some celery and carrots in there and it took them to another level—and that’s coming from someone who’s not a big fan of ranch. The garlic and spiciness completely transformed the flavor, making the sauce something all its own.

Of course, after all that heat, we had to end the afternoon with something sweet. The incredibly helpful staff had guided us through our entire visit—from explaining how to set up the golf games to checking in on us and making sure our food came in a timely fashion. So we trusted their recommendation to try their Injectable Donut Holes, and they did NOT disappoint. The mini donuts come with your choice of flavors in syringes that you can use to inject the donuts with additional tastes, making for the perfect finish to a really fun (& tasty) afternoon.

The nearest Topgolf to NYC is the Edison, NJ location, and while you need a car to get there you will most definitely not be disappointed by the effort. We know we weren’t! If you want to play the Angry Birds game as well, you can visit the Mount Laurel, NJ location which is a 1.5 hours drive from midtown. More on the Topgolf x Angry Birds collab here!
