The Shakespeare is a lively subterranean gastropub with a more serene upstairs dining room scene.  Just below midtown’s The William hotel lies an entrance into the bustling bar area, flanked by historical British art and knicknacks.  Just up a flight of steps lands you into the Shakespeare Dining Room, a more intimate and luxurious space with a chandelier, paintings, and a vintage mug collection.

Chef Simon Townsend has crafted a menu dominated by elevated pub classics from shepherd’s pie to scotch eggs.  A well thought out beer list is a key element to any great gastropub and the Shakespeare is no exception including some very nice cask ales (unfiltered and unpasteurised beer which is conditioned and served from a cask without additional nitrogen or carbon dioxide pressure.)

Though pub grub is often assumed to be heavier fare for hearty drinking the Shakespeare’s brook trout with horseradish mashed potatoes and creamed leeks is a lighter option yet still satisfyingly flavorful leaving room for a sticky toffee and date pudding in bourbon sauce and vanilla gelato.
