On September 11th, the House of Finland opened its doors to the public for the celebration of Finland’s 100th Anniversary of its Independence as part of the Finland100NYC series.

Prior to the public opening, we got a chance to attend the press preview. Attendees were able to nibble on small bites, talk to the designers and artists, explore the collection, and enjoy a concert from Finnish pop star GEA.

The collection is made up of over 13 designers from weecos.com, highlighting Finnish fashion. As the designers spoke about their inspirations and goals many mentioned how they were trying to transition away from fast fashion. A few designers also wanted to reduce their global impact and utilized recycled garments and pieces.

GEA is a Finnish Pop icon, a singer-songwriter by the name of Laura Avonius. She debuted her album release at the event named Butterflies. She sang some songs for the crowd and delivered a great performance.

Following GEA was Oases from HEL, a play on Helsinki the capital of Finland. The band is composed of two members Mikko H. Haapoja and Amanda Kauranne, whom explained that their music was supposed to be improvisational and even had a tent outside for an experience after the performance. Their act used visual and auditory components.

In addition to this, as part of the celebrations, guest were able to indulge in traditional Finnish foods and drinks.

Many sponsors were part of this series including Lumene. The Finnish cosmetic brand introduced guests to many of its products, many of whom had not heard of the Finnish company. Some of their goals as a company are to make sure their products are light, and protect the faces of their customers as they have introduced “urban protection”. This is to help against the elements especially in urban settings where pollution can be much higher.

“This will be FTDA’s fifth creative venture in NYC where you will be able to see a dynamic display that represents the best of Finnish talent. The centenary celebration is open to everyone interested in Finland, our culture, innovation, art, way of life and people. It is an honor to be able to showcase the rich ideals of Finland in time for our 100th year of independence,” said Laura Avonius, Finnish Tech, Design and Art.

If you missed all the fun, there is another event  from the series taking place at the Scandanavia House.
